Carara National Park Tour: Forest Trails and a Private River Safari

Walk Carara with a naturalist who knows when to stop. Then trade the trail for a private Tárcoles River safari, with lunch and hotel pickup from Jacó, Playa Herradura or Los Sueños.

Carara rewards people who are willing to notice. A call in the canopy. A flash of colour. One branch that suddenly isn’t still.

Your naturalist guide gives those moments room. Later, the Tárcoles changes the point of view from trail to river, with a boat reserved for your group, followed by lunch and the easy ride back to the coast.

Note: We secure park admission and your boat time before confirming the day. Wildlife keeps its own calendar.

The forest has one story. The river has another.

This Carara National Park tour is built around one useful idea: the forest gets better when nobody is hurrying you through it. Carara sits where drier and wetter forests meet, and a naturalist guide helps make sense of what changes from one stretch of trail to the next: calls overhead, movement in the leaves, details you might otherwise walk straight past.

Then the trail gives way to the Tárcoles. From the boat, the landscape opens into riverbank and mangrove, where crocodiles and waterbirds may appear on their own terms. Your transportation, guide and boat are arranged for your group. The park, dock and restaurant remain public spaces.

The Day, Minus the Fine Print

About Seven Hours

About Seven Hours

From hotel pickup to return, allow around seven hours within our core pickup area. Your hotel and the park’s seasonal opening time shape the exact schedule.

Actually Inside Carara

Actually Inside Carara

Park admission is included. You walk the forest with a naturalist guide instead of seeing Carara from the roadside and calling it close enough.

The pace follows the forest and your group, with time to listen, look again and linger when something deserves it.

Ninety Minutes on the River

About 90 minutes on the Tárcoles in a boat reserved for your group, scheduled around availability for your date.

Lunch, Once You’ve Earned It

Lunch, Once You’ve Earned It

Sit down for lunch after the forest and river. The restaurant and available menu are arranged as part of your tour details.

Two Hours on Foot

Plan on roughly two hours of guided walking, with pauses. Heat, humidity, rain and trail conditions can change the pace.

The Park Sets the Clock

Carara opens at 7 a.m. in December through April and 8 a.m. in May through November, subject to current park notices.

Private means more than the vehicle.

One group. One pace. One well-planned day.

One group. One pace. One well-planned day.

Your transportation, naturalist guide and river boat are arranged around your party. There is no shared Macua departure and no hotel-hopping before the day begins.

If the forest gives you a reason to stop, you can.

Send us your date, hotel and group details. We check park admission and boat availability together, then build one clear proposal around what is actually available.

You see the full arrangement and total price before you decide.

What’s Taken Care Of

Your day starts at your door.

One useful distinction: your vehicle, guide and river boat are reserved for your party. The trails, dock and restaurant are not.

Forest First. River Next. Lunch After.

Private tour vehicle arriving at a hotel near Jacó

Leave the coast behind

Meet your driver and naturalist guide at your pickup point and head inland toward Carara. The morning is timed around the park’s seasonal opening, so the exact pickup hour follows your date and hotel rather than an arbitrary departure time.

Guide and guests walking a maintained trail in Carara National Park

Walk slowly enough to notice

Enter Carara National Park for a guided walk of roughly two hours. Your guide interprets the meeting of dry and humid forest and watches for birds and other wildlife along the trails. A sighting is a privilege, never an appointment.

Private river boat viewing the Tárcoles riverbank from a safe distance

Trade the trail for the Tárcoles

A short transfer brings you to the river. From there, spend about 90 minutes on a boat reserved for your group, watching the banks and mangroves for crocodiles, herons and other birdlife. The crew keeps a respectful distance. The animals decide whether to make an appearance.

Costa Rican lunch served after a morning of forest and river exploration

Lunch, then back to the coast

After the river, sit down for lunch before heading back to your hotel. The full day is designed around roughly seven hours from pickup to return, with enough breathing room for the small shifts that come with trails, weather and a river that was here long before anyone started making itineraries.

◇ THE WORK BEHIND THE DAY

Good planning should be almost invisible.

Park tickets, seasonal opening times, hotel pickup, boat timing, guide, lunch. We line up the moving parts before you set out.

The point is not for you to admire the logistics. The point is for you not to have to think about them.

Worth Knowing Before You Go

Do we actually enter Carara National Park?
Yes. Park admission is included, and your naturalist guide takes you on a walk inside Carara before the river portion of the day. We check ticket availability for your date before the tour is confirmed.

Your transportation, naturalist guide and Tárcoles River boat are reserved for your group. The park trails, dock and restaurant are public, so you may see other visitors there.

Macua Tours does not combine your booking with another tour group.

Allow around seven hours from hotel pickup to return within Jacó, Playa Herradura or Los Sueños.

Carara opens at 7 a.m. from December through April and 8 a.m. from May through November. Your exact pickup time follows your hotel, date and the arrangements for that day.

Plan on around two hours of forest walking with stops. Heat, humidity, rain and uneven or wet sections can affect the pace.

Boat boarding may require steps and balance. Tell us about any mobility needs before booking so we can check the actual trail and boat arrangements for your date.

You may. Your guide will watch for wildlife in the forest and along the river, including birds and crocodiles where conditions allow.

Wildlife never reads itineraries, so we promise the search, not the sighting.

Wear comfortable closed-toe walking shoes and light clothing. Bring sun protection, insect repellent, a refillable water bottle, a compact rain layer and any personal medication.

Binoculars are welcome, though patience weighs less.

We prepare a proposal around your date, pickup location and group size after checking park admission and the boat.

You’ll see the total price, included services, payment terms and cancellation conditions before you book. Tell us about children’s ages and dietary needs so those details can be accounted for from the start.

Tell us where you’re staying.

Add your preferred date and the number of people traveling with you. If walking, boat boarding, children or food requirements matter to your group, tell us that too.

That is enough to start.

We’ll come back with the day laid out clearly enough for you to know exactly what you’re saying yes to.
